AWN is happy to support SHAD Dalhousie participants with our equipment bank this week during a hands-on water ecology session focused on local freshwater monitoring. Ten of the 53 SHAD Dalhousie participants joined the session, where they learned how to assess water quality, use D-nets for kick-and-sweep sampling, operate a YSI meter, and identify benthic macroinvertebrates to group level. 🦟🐌 Participants put their new skills into practice by sampling the stream that feeds Kearney Lake - building real-world science experience while exploring how healthy aquatic ecosystems are monitored and protected. 🌊 Thank you to SHAD Dalhousie for including AWN in this inspiring learning opportunity, and best of luck to all the students in their summer of discovery and skill building! 🤓 #WaterEcology #FreshwaterMonitoring #SHADDalhousie #YouthInSTEM #EnvironmentalEducation #AtlanticCanada

Shanna brought deep expertise in water quality, strong leadership, and an entrepreneurial spirit that helped shape new programs with meaningful impact across the water monitoring community. We are incredibly grateful for Shanna’s dedication to our partners and to the broader water community in Atlantic Canada. Her contributions have left a lasting mark, and we wish her best of luck. Last week, AWN and our partners at G3E joined an enthusiastic group in Edmundston, NB for a hands-on training session featuring AWN’s Water Monitoring Essentials and G3E’s Adopt a River program! 💧 Together, we explored how to build effective water quality monitoring plans, manage monitoring data, and use physicochemical analysis and macroinvertebrate studies to assess the health of local water bodies. 🐟 A big thank you to Société d'aménagement de la Rivière Madawaska (SARM) for hosting us! ___ La semaine dernière, AWN et nos partenaires de G3E se sont joints à un groupe enthousiaste à Edmundston, au Nouveau-Brunswick, pour une formation pratique mettant en vedette le programme Water Monitoring Essentials d’AWN et le programme J’adopte un cours d’eau de G3E ! 💧 Ensemble, nous avons exploré comment élaborer des plans efficaces de suivi de la qualité de l’eau, gérer les données de suivi, et utiliser des analyses physicochimiques ainsi que des études sur les macroinvertébrés pour évaluer la santé des plans d’eau locaux. 🐟 Un grand merci à la Société d’aménagement de la Rivière Madawaska (SARM) pour son accueil ! @g3eewag @sarm_nb

This group is more than ready for their field study at Sandy Lake, and we’re happy to hook them up with YSI units and other gear from our Halifax Equipment Bank. ⁣Did you know that many watersheds in Nova Scotia are still considered data deficient when it comes to water quality? The lack of monitoring in these watersheds leaves a critical gap in our understanding of ecosystem health across the province. At AWN, we’re working to fill these gaps by supporting the development of new community-based water monitoring programs. By providing training, equipment, and lab analysis funding, we’ve empowered two groups to start monitoring programs in the Tangier River Watershed (Otter Ponds Demonstration Forest) and the Middle River Watershed (Larder Lake).⠀ Stay tuned to Atlantic DataStream to explore these two new datasets in Nova Scotia! Big thanks to our funders, the Government of Nova Scotia and the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.

⁣We had a great time last weekend supporting the Nature Trust of New Brunswick’s new water quality monitoring initiative for their Nature Preserves!⠀ We trained some of their amazing volunteers to use Water Rangers’ Freshwater Explorer Kits so they can collect data from Nature Preserves throughout the province. This monitoring will help to fill data gaps across New Brunswick, while increasing NTNB’s stewardship monitoring efforts on their Nature Preserves. Keep an eye out for the data on both the Water Rangers’ data platform and Atlantic DataStream!⠀ ⠀ Big thanks to the Nature Trust of New Brunswick for the invite and to our funders, the Government of Canada and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, for making this work possible.⠀ @the_waterrangers @naturetrustnb ----------------------------------------⠀ ⠀ Nous avons passé un bon moment la fin de semaine dernière à soutenir la nouvelle initiative de surveillance de la qualité de l’eau de la Fondation pour la protection de la nature du Nouveau-Brunswick pour ses réserves naturelles! ⠀ ⠀ Nous avons formé certains de leurs incroyables bénévoles à l’utilisation des trousses d’exploration d’eau douce de Water Rangers afin qu’ils puissent recueillir des données dans les réserves naturelles de la province. Halifax Regional Municipality’s LakeWatchers Program has released their State of the Lakes Report for 2022-23.📝 Spearheaded by AWN’s former Director, Emma Wattie, the LakeWatchers program focuses on eutrophication, chloride enrichment, and bacterial contamination. Thanks to a generous donation from the NS Invasive Species Council, you can now find a copy of their Identification and Information Guide in each YSI kit at our Halifax Equipment Bank. Preventing the spread of invasive species in the field is as simple as 🔍Inspecting your gear and clothing for invasives before moving to a new location 🍃Removing organic material from your field equipment between sites 🦠Decontaminating equipment when your sites are high risk 🚣Following the "Clean, Drain, Dry" rule for watercraft between waterbodies We're so happy to add these guides to our Equipment Bank, so water stewards have the tools they need to confidently identify and report invasive species in NS watersheds! We're happy to welcome Alicia Higney as our new Equipment Bank and Training Officer! Alicia recently graduated from the Integrated Resource Management diploma at Saskatchewan Polytechnic and is looking forward to her 3rd year of environmental management studies at the University of New Brunswick this Fall. 📚 Alicia is happy to be back in her home town on the Eastern Shore for the summer and looks forward to using her skills and knowledge to preserve coastal ecosystems. She has been a partner of AWN and a practitioner of Community-Based Water Monitoring in Nova Scotia for many years. Under her leadership, AWN will continue to support watershed groups across Atlantic Canada through training, tools, and support, and explore innovative ways to build organizational resiliency, collaboration, and action.
