Atlantic Water Network (AWN), a project on the MakeWay Shared Platform, is Atlantic Canada’s hub for community-based water monitoring. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for managing AWN’s Equipment Bank, including the maintenance of water quality monitoring equipment, and the coordination of equipment loans with community groups, organizations, researchers, and other stakeholders. You will provide training on the proper use of equipment to ensure our partners are collecting accurate, high-quality data. You’ll have opportunities to join various community partners in the field for water quality monitoring and other aquatic conservation work. This role will also support AWN’s Nova Scotia-based projects including Community-Based Water Monitoring training and outreach events. The successful candidate needs to have First Aid certification, access to a vehicle for work purposes, strong organization skills, attention to detail, and effective communication skills.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1740146336704{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage Atlantic Water Network’s Halifax-based water monitoring Equipment Bank. This includes maintaining and calibrating water monitoring equipment, scheduling and executing equipment loans with community partners, providing support and training where needed, and maintaining professional relationships with Nova Scotia-based watershed organizations.
- Support AWN staff in developing and hosting training workshops for new/existing Community-Based Water Monitoring groups in Nova Scotia.
- Develop communication/marketing material to showcase the Equipment Bank and its users. This includes contributing to social media and newsletters, communicating equipment bank improvements and lessons learned to AWN staff and stakeholders, and performing outreach to potential equipment users.
- Attend and assist with a variety of virtual or in-person outreach events throughout the summer, such as Community Partners’ water quality monitoring programs, BioBlitzes, and workshops.

- Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;

- Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
- Coursework in science, including environmental science, ecology, or geography;
- Adept in both teamwork and working independently: takes initiative but knows when and how to get guidance, support, or direction;
- Strong organizational skills including the ability to set goals and prioritize diverse workloads, and the flexibility to adapt to changing needs;
- Effective communication skills with ability to communicate scientific concepts and technical information;
- Experience working with nonprofits, environmental organizations, or previous water monitoring experience will be consisted an asset.

This position is funded through the Clean Leadership Summer Internship program. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.
Program Requirements
- Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
- Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
- From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
- Must not be an immediate family member of host employer;

This position will require working with the public from both our office in Halifax, NS and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Our intern must be available to work in the office for 2-3 days per week, with options for remote work. Willingness to travel throughout the province is required.
Physical Requirements
This position requires frequent use of monitoring equipment, requiring fine motor skills. Fieldwork and outreach events will involve working in aquatic environments including streams, rivers, lakes, or riparian environments during variable weather conditions.
